Effective Altruism / Where My Donations Go To And Why

Enter Wikipedia

Effective altruism is a philosophy and social movement that aims to apply evidence and reason to determine the most effective ways to benefit others. Effective altruism encourages individuals to consider all causes and actions and to act in the way that brings about the greatest positive impact, based upon their values. It is the broad, evidence-based approach that distinguishes effective altruism from traditional altruism or charity.

Another Explanation From Effective Altruism

Most of us want to make a difference. We see suffering, injustice and death, and are moved to do something about them. But working out what that ‘something’ is, let alone actually doing it, is a difficult problem.

Effective altruism is about working out how we should help others, using evidence and reason. And it’s about acting on the basis of what we find: focusing on the most effective solutions to the most pressing problems. This essay is an introduction to what we’ve found so far, and to how you can use those ideas to have an impact.

In Other Words

Effective Altruism is doing the most good possible. I love this concept and movement because I try to find the most value anywhere I can. Knowing this and coming across Effective Altruism just makes sense to me. This movement keeps charities in line while stretching the dollar/actions to do the most good. It’s an accountability that is greatly appreciated to those in need.

Most bang for your buck!!!!

Where I use it

I use Effective Altruism anywhere that I make money. I make sure to include an Effective Altruism supporter in the process. Whether that is my book sales, music, podcast, or my company. This is something I feel strongly about and should be talked about more. This movement has my full support.

The Importance

The importance of Effective Altruism. I think the Effective Altruism is so important because of the accountability. With this movement someone who is donating knows that a majority of their funds are going to effect the cause instead of not knowing where that money goes. This movement just makes everyone feel better with a clear head and that is priceless.

Who I Choose.

The supporter I choose is GiveWell. They are so important to me because they already have a system in place that is holding these charities accountable and making donating simple which it should be.

Enter GiveWell to explain this more in detail

GiveWell is a nonprofit dedicated to finding outstanding giving opportunities and publishing the full details of our analysis to help donors decide where to give.

Unlike charity evaluators that focus solely on financials, assessing administrative or fundraising costs, we conduct in-depth research aiming to determine how much good a given program accomplishes (in terms of lives saved, lives improved, etc.) per dollar spent. Rather than try to rate as many charities as possible, we focus on the few charities that stand out most (by our criteria) in order to find and confidently recommend high-impact giving opportunities (our list of top charities).

I love the system that GiveWell has created. I donate to their operation to keep up their great work and help keep them running.
